He got that coffee, fending off maternal questioning about who he’d been yelling at upstairs. The morning show his mom was still watching made his debut a reason to discuss the Public Safety Law. Was Killjoy on the new Resident Superhumans list? Did the Illinois Department of Public Safety have the duty to confirm or deny his existence on the Resident Superhumans list if it was queried? (Keeping his identity shielded, of course.) The table consensus was “Yes,” the government should admit if they knew who he was. Kingston gave them props for consistency anyway.

No props for anything else.

Finishing his coffee and not at all hungry, he asked if he could borrow the car another day, promising to pick September up at the airport. (He kicked himself for not checking the key rack back at the townhouse for the replacement car Red had said Powers Inc. swapped her blown-up one for.) And Red sent him the address where he’d go to start the training he’d asked for—which turned out to be the same place where she’d helped test his power, the warehouses of the TV-drug deals.

He went.

The gate was again unlocked, and Kingston was beginning to wonder if someone who Red knew owned it and kept it vacant for clandestine business. Was there a reservation list? Could you pick a day to use the big buildings when nobody else would be accessing the property?

Another car sat in front of the loading bay he’d parked at before, a nondescript Ford town car. Climbing the concrete steps to the metal access door, Kingston opened it to find someone he hadn’t been expecting. “Simon?”

The lean “Brit” looked different, with dark short-cropped hair and wearing jeans and a black t-shirt under an open red button down. His sarcastic smile hadn’t changed, though.

“Hey, kid. Miss me?” The accent was gone.
